2002 Moonshine Rally Report
6 December 2002
Trevor and Ricky Reid took a clear win in last Friday night's Moonshine Rally. This navigation rally was run by Queen's University Motor Club, and based in Saintfield, Co Down. The Reids only possible threat came from the Dorman brothers, Phil and Alan, but they were forced to stop as the navigator felt unwell. This left the way clear for an excellent run, in which the winners only picked up 3 minutes penalties in over 60 miles of driving. Gary McDonald and Peter Barker made a welcome return to the sport, and finished 2nd overall in their Triumph Toledo.
This event was mostly about novice navigators, and one shone in particular. Ryan McGimpsey, navigating for the first time ever, took victory in Class 4 with his father, Robert, driving. They were an excellent 4th overall and they beat many more experienced crews in the process. Raymond Kelly and Colin McDowell took their Midget to 2nd in Class 4, but just like they did in their last rally, they picked up a maximum 30 penalties for missing one of the later controls. Margaret and Jonathan McKane were one of the many crews to travel from Omagh for the event, and they finished 6th overall, ahead of the first of the Class 3 crews, Patsy Branney and Andy Gilmore.
