The MG Car Club has evolved since its inception in 1930, via a long period of operation within the MG Car Company at Abingdon, to become a thriving Club with 12 autonomous Centres in the UK and 65 associated worldwide. There are registers to offer advice on each individual model and competition groups which organise no less than 6 racing championships, ie, BCV8, Sprite and Midget, T-Type, MMM and MGA. There are also several Regional Race Championships. The Club’s motorsport events calendar extends to 1200 events within the UK.
The Ulster Centre formed in 1968 has a fluctuating membership of approx 200 and runs the Leslie Porter (for MGs only) and Vivien Scott (for all makes) autotest championships together with Ireland’s only Production Car (PCT) Championship and 2 Classic Trials, which include both autotests and PCTs.
The Ulster Centre is very much aware that the youth of today is tomorrow’s club and so endeavour to encourage younger folk into motorsport and have classes suitable for beginners. The Centre holds hugely successful autotest tutorials for both beginners and improvers. It now also hosts a round of the Northern Ireland Autotest Championship which incorporates the new Clubman Autotest Challenge, designed to take competent autotesters to the highest level in the sport. The Centre has continued to attract high entries for their various competitive events.
The Ulster Centre has been closely involved with the main MG Car Club and regularly compete against other MG Centres in the annual California Cup Autotest, BMC Trophy & The MG B Register Trophy at MG Silverstone. Over recent years 2010, 2011, 2014 and 2017 saw the teams bring back the most prestigious award, The California Cup, amongst others.
2018 is the Ulster Centre's 50th anniversary and it will be celebrating its Golden Jubilee with a number of events including a 4 day Tour, grand Dinner Dance and, of course, an element of motorsport competition to mark this milestone in typical MG style.
