2002 Erne Safari Report

12 April 2002

Eddie Murphy and Barry Taggart extended their lead in the Northern Ireland Navigation Rally Championship with victory in the Erne Safari Rally.

An impressive entry of 34 cars started the Enniskillen Motor Club's event on a beautiful spring evening.

Murphy/Taggart lead throughout, as they were the only crew not to struggle with a section of reverse order clock face diagrams. The Class 2 crew of David Vance and Derek Graham finished an impressive 2nd overall, with Leslie Young and Lewis Boyd 3rd in their Sierra.

Trevor and Ricky Reid were 4th, and John Henderson and Lloyd Cochrane finished 5th in a Toyota Corolla, lent to them by Robbie McClean after their Talbot Sunbeam suffered terminal engine trouble on the way to the event.

In Class 3, the Queen's University crew of Stephen Wishart/Jonathon Charlesson kept up their 100% class-winning record with victory over another QUB crew of James Woods and Gareth Jackson.

The championship now takes its summer break, recommencing in mid-September in Dungannon.
