Scallon Cup Report

26 October 2012

An entry list of eighteen crews tackled tricky conditions on a demanding course during the Scallon Cup navigation rally organised by Omagh Motor Club.

The eventual winners of the event were local pairing Nigel Simpson and David Howard driving a Vauxhall Astra and produced the perfect performance by not incurring any penalties during the 55 mile event.

The rally started at the Glendale Filling station and during the first half of the rally, incorporated the route twisting through the narrow roads around the Glenhordial and Mountfield regions. The majority of the crews found very few difficulties in negotiating the course to the half way halt at Drumnakilly with Simpson / Howard leading closely followed jointly by Loughgall pairing John and Jonathan Henderson and Magheralin crew of Ciaran Carey and Rachel Muldoon on two penalties with Hillsborough crew of Ronnie and Aaron Mitchell closely following on three penalties.

The second half of the course then traversed the Beragh and Sixmilecross areas proving to be more testing for most crews due to icy conditions with only the Mitchell’s improving their position to clinch the runners up spot by going penalty free along with the Simpson / Howard crew.

At the finish, the closely contested rally had a spread of only nine penalties between the top four positions with Omagh crew Peter Curran and Ryan McCloskey finishing in fifth position overall.

Other notable finishes from local crews within the novice section were provided by Seskinore pairing Alistair and Colleen Barker, Mark and Sean McAleer and Alistair Cooke / Matthew Barr making the top seven places within the Challenge class.

At the prize giving ceremony at the Whistlers Inn, Sixmilecross, Clerk of the Course, Dessie McAleer thanked all competitors for attending and also all the marshalls and officials for assisting in making the event successful.
