EMC NI Championship Autotest

 

Saturday 21st May saw Enniskillen Motor Club [EMC] run the fifth round of the Sam Bowden Garage Services ANICC NI Autotest Championship 2016. EMC were pleased to once again have on board Lakeland Tours as sponsor for this exciting event.  Veteran organiser, Keith Boyd, again produced a cracking test of skill and nerve for some 16 autotest contenders on the concrete yard at St Angelo, courtesy of Severfield Rowen. As usual there was an eclectic mix of vehicles over the four classes: from the super Mini Saloon of former winner Robin Lyons to the spectacular rear-wheel drive special: the Sylva Stryker of Paul Blair. 

 

After the first four rounds of the championship the leading contenders for the Overall Championship title and a chance, at this stage, of winning the Paddy Hopkirk Perpetual Trophy were Peter Grimes, Paul Blair, David Thompson, Norman Ferguson and Ashley Lamont. 

 

After twelve hotly contested tests the top four were only separated by a mere 16.2 seconds. Paul Mooney proved to be the man to beat winning the overall prize by 14.4 seconds from Paul Blair with Ashley Lamont third a further 1.4 seconds back and Robin Lyons just 0.6 seconds adrift in 4th. 

 

In the class battles Paul Mooney claimed Class A with second going to Peter Grimes and third to Steven Ferguson – both multiple national award winners and previous winners here at St Angelo. Class B saw Paul Blair edge out Ashley Lamont with third taken by Tom Devaney. Robin Lyons won Class C, the Small Saloon Class and Class D, the Large Saloon Class was clinched by David Thompson with Mark King second and Jamie McMillan in third. 

 

At the prize-giving, CofC, Keith Boyd thanked Ian McCutcheon of Lakeland Tours for his continued and valued sponsored and Severfield Rowen for the use of their yard. He also thanked all the competitors for appearing on the day and for the exciting and skilful driving skills on display all afternoon. Keith also made a point of thanking his organising team, all the marshals and timekeepers who did such a professional job throughout the day.
